Fraserburg United Church - Summer services are still held here. *****Click on the pages to enlarge them.

Our Gavin ancestors attended the United Church at Fraserburg which was, of course, a Presbyterian Church until the unification in 1925 of two-thirds of the Presbyterian congregation in Canada with the Methodist and Congregational Churches.

Rev. Malcolm Nicolson Bethune, the father of Dr. Norman Bethune, was the pastor in Gravenhurst from 1889 to 1892. It is believed that he advocated for the opening of the Fraserburg Church as a student minister.

The Ladies Aid Society formed in August, 1899 was comprised of a number of Gavin women and a future Gavin wife. Mrs. Allan Smith (Christina), Vice-President was the mother-in-law of Mrs. Hammond (Maggie Gavin); Miss Florence Jackson, Secretary was the future Mrs. Ab Gavin; Mrs. Gavin (Margaret Horne), Treasurer, was Mrs. Hammond's mother; Mrs. Ashdown was the mother of Jessie Brewster, the future Mrs. Will Gavin, and Mrs. Jackson, was the mother of Florence.
