Minnie Gavin, Mrs. Archibald Yuill 1882-1923

John A. Yuill, son of Minnie Gavin Yuill 1910-1983 (Photo: R. Yuill)

A married woman.

A young woman.

......Minnie Gavin was the fourth daugher of Robert Gavin and Margaret Horn. She was born May 22nd, 1882 at Purbrook, Muskoka. She last appears with her parents in the 1901 census of Purbrook at 18.

......The John Yuill family appears in the 1881 Muskoka census as - John Yuill, 52, and his two older sons Andrew Fraser, age 10, and Duncan McKeller, age 8. In the 1911 census, Archie who was the youngest son, states that he came to Canada in 1883. It would seem then that the father and two sons came first and the wife and youngest son followed. In 1891 and 1901, they appear in the census as follows:

1891 - Draper Township
John Yuel, 64, b. Scotland, Farmer
Elizabeth Yuel, 57, b. Scotland
Andrew Yuel, 20, b. Scotland
Duncan Yuel, 18, b. Scotland
Archibald, 16, b. Scotland

Guill John, Head, Nov 11, 1827, 73
Guill Elizabeth, Wife, Jun 10, 1832, 68
Guill Andrew F., Son, Sep 13, 1870, 30
(John and Andrew report arriving in Canada in 1878.
Elizabeth reports her date of arrival as 1883)

I have been unable to find Archie Yuill in the 1901 census, however, he married Minnie Gavin August 21, 1901 when she was 19 and he was 27. His address was Bracebridge and Minnie's was Draper Township at the time of their marriage.
*
Their first child, Marjorie, was born September 16, 1901. It appears that this child did not survive. A second daughter, Minnie, was born April 1st, 1904 followed by Doris Margaret July 5, 1908 (census says 1909 but registration is 1908) both in Muskoka.
*
Their third child, John, was born in August of 1910. I have been unable to find the birth registration to confirm where he was born, but the family was living in Hutton Township, Nipissing (Sudbury area) by the time the 1911 census was taken.
*
Archie was in the lumber business, as were the Gavins. (Archie's brother, Andrew Yuill and perhaps Archie himself, worked in Gavin lumber camps.) They followed the industry as trees were cut farther and farther north. Yuill oral history jokingly records that "Archie clear cut everything from Muskoka to Folyet."

Minnie Gavin Yuill died the 9th of January, 1923 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sudbury. Family history says she died at their cottage in Whitefish Lake (west of Sudbury) where they had vacationed for some years. Her death certificate states that she was 40 years, 7 months and 18 days old, was the daughter of Robert Gavin and Margaret Horne who were born in Lanark County and that she had been born in Purbrook.
*
The primary cause of her death is given as typhoid fever and contributing was a perforated intestine. It also mentions 'operation shock; the operation preceded death. No autopsy was performed. She was buried January 11, 1923 and the undertaker was J.G. Henry. Archie Yuill was the informant for her death.

Her obituary adds the following information: "On Wednesday of last week, Mrs. Archy Yuill of Sudbury, passed away after a few days illness, aged 40 years....The funeral was held at Sudbury on Friday, January (?).....Mr. Albert Gavin of Bracebridge and Mr. William Gavin of Midhurst attended the funeral. Besides her husband left to mourn the loss, are four children - Minnie, Doris, John and Beatrice; her mother, Mrs. Gavin of Purbrook, and the following sisters and brothers:
