Sarah M. Gavin, Mrs. John Crockford, 1873-1943

Sarah Miller Gavin was the second child of Robert Gavin and Margaret Horn. She was born at Watson's Corners in Lanark County on May 25th, 1873. She is with her parents in the 1881 Census in Draper Twp, but in the 1891 Census, there are two 'Sarah Given's in the census records. One is Sarah Miller Given with her parents in Purbrook. Further searching places a Sarah Given with John and Martha Thomson, Chemist / Druggist in Bracebridge. She is shown as:
'Sarah Given, F, 20 years old, b. Ont, father b. Scotland(?), Presbyterian, Domestic Servant.' Perhaps these two entries are not the same woman; however, except for age, the two entries are the same.

Sarah married John Crockford on September 27, 1893. They lived at Purbrook for some time and then moved to Thessalon.

A diary written by a man named John Moon records the following:
"I stayed a short time with John Crockford and family whose place was about half way on a sideroad between Fraserburg and Purbrook. With them was an orphan boy named Walter Scott, Their children were two boys and a girl. The boys were named John and Carlton. This time was the deer hunting season, the first half of November, 1904.........(later entry) John Crockford, the younger family had gone to Thessalon, Algoma in the fall of 1905 and whose cattle I had helped to drive to the railway yard at Bracebridge Station."
