Some Went East -1862

Excerpt from a letter from Doris Frost of Summerside, P.E.I. -Sept, 1980

"Someone talked with an elderly Dignan man (two daughters of Robert Houstin Horn were married to Dignan men).....who related a story that goes thus:

In 1862, Robert Houstin Horn, age 33, and his wife Sarah Given Horn and Sarah (5), Mary (4), Agnes (3), Elizabeth (2), and Jane (1) left Smith Falls, Ontario for Prince Edward Island. Their reason for leaving was the destruction of their crops, sheep and cows by bears.

In Summerside, P.E.I. they hired an ox and cart to take them to John McNight's Halfway House at Coleman Corners. There they hired a truck wagon and horses to take them to Gavin's Corner in Bloomfield. Matthew Gavin was Mrs. Horn's brother."
